Arderne Gardens, at 222 Main Road, Claremont, is a tranquil public park and arboretum established in 1845 by timber merchant Ralph Henry Arderne. Spanning 4.5 hectares, it features over 400 trees, including six officially recognized Champion Trees, such as the majestic Moreton Bay Fig (“Wedding Tree”) and towering Norfolk Island Pine.

🌳 Highlights & Heritage

  • Originally part of the old Stellenberg Estate, the garden was acquired and transformed by the Arderne family into a living collection of global tree species—a botanical vision connected to Kew Gardens and early plant exchanges by ship.
  • In 1928 the City purchased the land to prevent development; it was later designated a provincial heritage site in 1979.
  • The Friends of Arderne Gardens (FOTAG), founded in 2004, revived the space through restoration and community-led care.

🍃 What to Experience

  • Wander shaded pathways through romantic glades, discover koi ponds with Japanese-style bridges, and relax on the “great lawn” beneath giant pines.
  • Ideal for picnics, wedding photography, family outings, and birdwatching (over 38 species recorded).
  • The garden also features themed spaces like the Hiroshima Peace Garden and upcoming Gandhi Memorial.

📌 Visitor Info & Amenities

  • Open daily 08:00–18:00, with free entry—donations welcome at the gate to support FOTAG projects.
  • On-street parking available; MetroRail’s Harfield Road station is nearby.
  • Dogs on leads are allowed; 24-hour security ensures a safe visit.
  • Guided tours by FOTAG run monthly (R50 donation) to explore champion trees, wildlife, and history.
