Location

Prestwich Memorial, Buitengracht Street, Cape Town City Centre, Cape Town, South Africa

Prestwich Memorial & Garden, situated at the corner of Buitengracht and Somerset Streets in Cape Town’s historic De Waterkant district, serves as a solemn tribute to the city’s buried ancestry. The site opened in 2008 following the discovery and reinterment of over 2,000 remains from a 17th–18th century informal burial ground used by slaves, Khoi people, poor citizens, and sailors during colonial times.

🕊️ Memorial & Design

  • The structure features a single‑storey building clad in grey Robben Island slate, housing a minimalist visitor centre, a burial ossuary, and a shaded garden aligned with the historical cemetery layout and original Somerset Road alignment.
  • Original cemetery wall remnants remain visible beside the entrance, and the architecture preserves sightlines to St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the first church in South Africa to welcome freed slaves in 1838.

📚 Interpretive Experience

  • Inside, visitors encounter storytelling panels recounting Cape Town’s District One history, colonial burial practices, forced removals, and memorialization efforts; the ossuary itself holds shelves of respectfully stored remains in wooden boxes—accessible visually but not publicly entered.
  • The design invokes reflection: low entrance doors encourage bowing before entering the ossuary chamber, underlining the site’s respectful purpose.

🌿 Garden & Heritage Space

  • The adjacent memorial garden features indigenous planting, stone pathways, and contemplative seating designed to evoke the realignment of the Dutch Reformed Church cemetery grounds and neighborhood layout from the colonial era.
  • The site is part of a cultural narrative linking Fosher streets, tram line remnants, churches, and urban heritage trails across District One and the V&A Waterfront precincts.

🕒 Visiting Info

  • The memorial is open daily hours: typical mornings and afternoons (e.g. Mon–Fri 07:00–17:00, weekends to 14:00), as noted in traveler guides—but access may vary based on events or maintenance; entrance is free and self-guided.
  • Contact phone: +27 21 418 0073 for appointment-based archival visits or group tours.
