Spookfontein Wines & Tastings, Hemel en Aarde Rd, Hermanus, South Africa
Nestled in the serene Hemel-en-Aarde Valley between the Kleinrivier and Babilonstoring mountains, Spookfontein Wine Farm is a boutique estate where passion meets terroir. Rooted in local legend, the farm’s name—Afrikaans for “ghost fountain”—refers to a misty apparition thought to appear in the farm’s natural spring.
Today, the farm comprises 313 hectares, with just 14 under vine and olive trees, preserving the rest as indigenous fynbos—a testament to the family's environmental stewardship. The vineyards bask in a cool maritime climate that naturally tempers summer warmth, resulting in elegant, expressive wines—especially Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Bordeaux-style blends like their iconic Phantom.
Architecturally, Spookfontein embraces the landscape. The tasting room, restaurant, and cellar are built with flowing curves and natural materials, intentionally designed to harmonize with the hillside rather than dominate it.
The on-site restaurant, led by Head Chef Charl and partners Vaughan and Francois, serves creative, seasonal cuisine that feels both refined and rooted in local flavou. Highlight dishes like gnocchi and pork ramen pair brilliantly with Spookfontein wines, and tasting fees are waived with a case purchase.
For overnight stays, the farm offers two self-catering cottages:
Activities extend beyond the cellar. Guests can explore walking paths through vineyards, fynbos, birdwatch (look out for Cape sugarbirds, sunbirds, and visiting blue cranes), take short hikes for panoramic views, or enjoy nearby mountain biking and equestrian trails .
Spookfontein shines as a destination that truly blends sensory delight with sense of place—a wine, food, and nature experience woven into the landscape of Hemel-en-Aarde.
