6 De Wet Street, Franschhoek, South Africa
Nestled at 33 Drakenstein Road, Durbanville Hills, the Durbanville Rose Garden is a treasured public green space established in 1979 by the Western Cape Rose Society. It’s one of just three trial rose gardens in the Southern Hemisphere, where new cultivars are nurtured and evaluated. Spanning 3.5 hectares, the garden is home to approximately 4,500 rose bushes representing around 500 diverse varietals—including hybrid teas, floribundas, antique roses, climbers, and medal-winning specimens—all cultivated on fertile east-facing slopes. Stroll along the paved trails, explore themed flowerbeds, or relax near the gazebo that showcases the ‘Fairest Cape’ rose and enjoy picturesque views that make it a beloved backdrop for wedding photography, especially in summer. From October to May, the garden is at its colorful peak. On Sundays during this season, local charities serve cream tea in the tearoom—a warm community tradition. Entry is free, with open hours typically Monday to Friday: 8 AM–4 PM, Saturday: 8 AM–4 PM, and Sunday: 8 AM–3 PM, though weekend tearoom hours extend longer. Free parking is available, and the garden is supported by dedicated municipal gardeners alongside volunteers from “Friends of the Rose Garden.” While public picking of roses is not allowed, the garden hosts rosarian pruning workshops twice a year—a great chance for enthusiasts to learn care techniques firsthand. A clubhouse on-site is also available for small gatherings like baby showers or birthdays (no alcohol or loud music allowed) for a modest fee
The Durbanville Rose Garden is more than a floral display—it’s a living heritage space that offers tranquility, learning, and lasting memories to visitors of all ages. Whether you’re strolling its paths, attending a tea, or snapping photos among the blooms, every visit feels like a mini escape.
