The Old Toll House is a historic attraction located on Malgaekraal Farm near the foot of the famous Montagu Pass outside George in the Western Cape. Built in the mid-1800s during the construction of Montagu Pass, the building originally served as the residence and checkpoint for the toll keeper who collected fees from wagons, carts, and travelers using the pass.
Constructed from local sandstone, the toll house played an important role in the early transport network connecting George with the Little Karoo and surrounding farming regions. Travellers transporting goods, livestock, and mail had to stop here to pay toll charges before continuing their journey over the mountain pass.
Today, the Old Toll House has been preserved and restored by community volunteers, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience a piece of the Garden Route’s rich heritage. Guests can explore the historic building, learn about the stories of early travellers, and enjoy freshly made pancakes and coffee while relaxing in the peaceful mountain surroundings.
The site also features scenic views of the Outeniqua Mountains and a short Biblical Trail walk, making it a quiet and reflective stop for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and travellers exploring the historic Montagu Pass route.
