Location

Woodstock Cave, Table Mountain (Nature Reserve), Cape Town, South Africa

Perched high on the slopes of Devil’s Peak within the Table Mountain National Park, Woodstock Cave is an impressive natural feature: essentially a broad horizontal fissure in the sandstone, approximately 50 m wide by 15 m deep, offering incredible panoramic views of the city below, Lion’s Head, Table Bay and beyond.

Why it’s special

  • The cave (or large overhang) is easily visible from suburbs like Woodstock and Salt River — you’ll spot it as a dark slash halfway up Devil’s Peak.
  • The viewpoint is outstanding: once you reach the cave you can sit or rest there, with a sweeping vista down the City Bowl and across to the Atlantic.
  • The geological formation itself is fascinating: formed in the Table Mountain Sandstone, it’s a testament to erosion and weathering of the rugged Cape Peninsula massif.

Hike & access info

  • The trail to Woodstock Cave is rated moderate to challenging, depending on route and fitness. Portions are rocky, uneven and require some ascent.
  • One common route begins at the Rhodes Memorial or Tafelberg Road parking area and matures into a zig‑zag trail up to the cave.
  • Recommended: sturdy hiking shoes, sufficient water, check weather/conditions — as with all mountain trails in the park, safety awareness is important.

Visitor Tips

  • Aim for a clear day for the best views — visibility makes a big difference with the vista stretching across city, harbour and sea.
  • Early morning or just after sunrise can be magical: softer light, fewer people, and cooler temperatures.
  • While accessible, it’s not a casual stroll — some uphill walking and care on rocky ground. Families should assess the trail relative to their group’s capabilities.
  • No formal facilities at the cave itself — pack out what you pack in, and leave no trace.
  • Consider combining the hike with other nearby attractions on Table Mountain’s eastern slopes for a full nature‑experience day.
