Elandskloof road, Franschhoek, South Africa
Nestled in the scenic Franschhoek Valley, Farm Sanctuary SA is a boutique sanctuary and creative refuge dedicated to rescued farm animals and promoting compassionate living.
Helmed by animal advocate Joanne Lefson, the sanctuary aims to “instil an awakened connection between farm animals and visitors,” championing empathy and sustainability through immersive experiences. Funds raised through unique art and hospitality offerings support rescue and rehabilitation efforts, while champions plant-based alternatives to industrial farming.
While the world-renowned painting pig Pigcasso (rescued in 2016) and painting sheep Baanksy no longer do live demos, their artworks remain on display in the OINK Gallery—each piece signed with a snout or hoof—and continue to fund the sanctuary’s mission.
“Paints with such gusto” — comments from fans on Reddit about Pigcasso’s creative flair.
Open daily from around 9 am to 4–5 pm, entry is free (donations encouraged), with no booking required for general visits. Visitors can stroll through the sanctuary, feed the animals, explore art, and enjoy wine tastings with vegan offerings at the Wonki Donkey Deli. Reddit users highlight the friendly animals and interactive connection:
“Farm Sanctuary SA … has a few rescue cows that are very friendly that you can pet and feed… super cool and informative experience!”
