Hamilton Russell Vineyards, Hemel en Aarde Rd, Hermanus, South Africa
Hamilton Russell Vineyards is a trailblazing wine estate nestled in the cool, maritime-influenced Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus. Founded in 1975 by Tim Hamilton Russell—who sought out the southernmost ideal site for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay—this estate remains one of Africa’s most southerly vineyards.
Covering some 170 hectares, the estate has meticulously honed its viticulture to just 52 hectares of clay-rich, shale-derived soils that mirror the terroir found in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. Under Anthony Hamilton Russell, who took the helm in 1991, the estate narrowed its focus exclusively to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, aiming to allow each grape to express the personality of the land.
Hamilton Russell wines are globally revered—critics and sommeliers frequently hail them as South Africa’s finest. Descriptions such as “the gold standard,” “a New World icon,” and “as Burgundian as it gets outside France” underscore their prestige.
Visitors are welcomed in a charming historic cottage overlooking a tranquil bird-laden lake near the cellar. Tastings take place here, inviting guests to savor these elegant, terroir-driven wines amid serene surroundings. The estate also holds WWF Conservation Champion status, reflecting its long-standing environmental stewardship.
Tasting Room Hours:
Today, under the steady guidance of Anthony, winemaker Emul Ross, and viticulturist Johan Montgomery, Hamilton Russell continues to produce limited-yield, world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that remain in exceptionally short supply and high demand.
