Kenilworth Racecourse Conservation Area, Rosmead Avenue, Kenilworth, Cape Town, South Africa
The Kenilworth Racecourse Conservation Area (KRCA), established in 1985, is a 52-hectare nature reserve situated in the heart of the Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town. This unique conservation area is one of the largest remaining examples of Cape Flats Sand Fynbos, a critically endangered vegetation type endemic to the Cape Peninsula.
The KRCA is home to over 300 plant species, including 34 that are threatened with extinction. Notably, it hosts the critically endangered Micro Frog (Microbatrachella capensis), along with various amphibians, reptiles, birds, and small mammals. The reserve also supports seasonal wetlands and is a haven for biodiversity within an urban setting.
The KRCA is co-managed by Cape Racing and Nature Connect. Conservation activities include habitat restoration, alien vegetation removal, and environmental education programs. Volunteers and community members actively participate in these efforts to maintain and enhance the area's ecological health.
Visits to the KRCA are by prior arrangement only. The reserve offers educational programs and guided walks, making it an excellent destination for schools, nature enthusiasts, and community groups interested in urban conservation.
