Nobel Square is a contemplative open-air plaza situated in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, between the V&A Hotel and the Watershed. This public space honors South Africa’s four Nobel Peace Prize laureates with striking bronze sculptures: Albert Luthuli, Desmond Tutu, F.W. de Klerk, and Nelson Mandela
The statues, created by renowned artist Claudette Schreuders, are slightly larger than life and arranged in a graceful semicircle with Table Mountain rising behind them. The ground in front of each figure is engraved with the laureate’s quote in their preferred language, adding profound context to the visual tribute.
In addition to these figures, a fifth sculpture entitled "Peace and Democracy" by Noria Mabasa honors the essential contributions of women and children in South Africa’s journey toward democracy.
Unveiled in December 2005, Nobel Square serves as both a reflective cultural landmark and a popular gathering spot for visitors and locals alike. Open daily and with free access, it’s conveniently located next to the Two Oceans Aquarium, shops, eateries, and offers accessible options for parking and public transit—including the MyCiTi bus.
