De Grendel Wine Estate and Restaurant, Panorama, Cape Town, 7500, South Africa

Perched on the breathtaking Tygerberg slopes above Durbanville, De Grendel Wine Estate is one of Cape Town’s oldest agricultural landmarks, with roots dating to 1720. Managed by the Graaff baronet family for five generations, it blends deep history with contemporary excellence.

Heritage & Estate

Originally acquired by Sir David Graaff in 1891 as a stud farm for his prized Arabian horses, De Grendel transitioned to winemaking in 2000 under the 3rd Baronet Sir David. Today, Sir De Villiers Graaff continues the legacy and drives the estate’s evolution with innovation and stewardship. The estate spans over 330 hectares, featuring vineyards, livestock, indigenous conservation areas, and Renosterveld fynbos—a testament to its biodiversity and sustainability focus.

Wine & Tasting

Managed by Charles Hopkins since 2005, the estate produces acclaimed wines such as Rubaiyat blend, Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc, Op Die Berg range, and Elim Shiraz, many achieving 5-star Platter’s Guide ratings. Tastings are hosted in a harmoniously designed cellar and tasting room offering phenomenal 360° views of Table Mountain, Cape Town, and the Atlantic, making for a truly elevated experience.

Dining & Experiences

The De Grendel Restaurant, opened in 2012, showcases fine dining rooted in Cape heritage, seasonal farm produce, and inventive cuisine by Chef Ian Bergh. It consistently ranks among Africa’s top restaurant destinations. Visitors can also enjoy vineyard and cellar tours or picnics in the scenic gardens—available with curated baskets for a relaxed afternoon under the sun.
