The Huguenot Society of South Africa, established in 1953, is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history and heritage of the French Huguenots who sought refuge at the Cape of Good Hope in the late 17th century. These Protestant refugees fled religious persecution in France, bringing with them invaluable skills in viticulture, agriculture, and craftsmanship, which significantly contributed to the development of the region.

Huguenot Memorial Museum

Located in Franschhoek, the Huguenot Memorial Museum offers a comprehensive exploration of the Huguenot experience. The museum's exhibits include a curated collection of artefacts such as furniture, Bibles, silverware, portraits, porcelain, and archival documents, illustrating the life of the Huguenots at the Cape. The museum's redesign connects the local history of the Huguenots to global issues of persecution and refugeeism, providing a multi-layered interpretation of their journey and settlement.

Huguenot Monument

Adjacent to the museum stands the Huguenot Monument, inaugurated on 17 April 1948. Designed by J.C. Jongens and featuring a central female figure by Coert Steynberg, the monument symbolizes religious freedom and the Huguenot spirit. The three high arches represent the Holy Trinity, while the female figure holds a Bible in one hand and a broken chain in the other, signifying liberation from oppression. The monument's design reflects the cultural and spiritual legacy of the Huguenots in South Africa.

Society's Role

The Huguenot Society's primary focus is the upkeep and development of the Huguenot Memorial Museum and Monument. Through its efforts, the Society ensures that the history and contributions of the Huguenots are preserved for future generations. Additionally, the Society offers membership opportunities, publications, and events to engage the public in the ongoing appreciation of Huguenot heritage.
