Intaka Island—“bird” in Xhosa—is a remarkable 16 hectare man-made wetland and nature reserve nestled within Century City, just 7 km from Cape Town’s CBD. Awarded voluntary conservation status in 2006, it showcases how urban development and nature can coexist harmoniously.
Visitors can explore a 2 km self-guided trail (or a shorter 1 km loop), visiting nine interpretive stations and enjoying two bird hides overlooking waterfowl habitat.
Over 120 bird species—including kingfishers, herons, and weavers—can be spotted, with photographers and wildlife lovers drawn to its rich biodiversity.
A comfortable boat cruise on the Grand Canal offers a unique perspective and scenic views, including a “hop-on hop-off” option at Canal Walk.
For a more immersive experience, guided ranger-led trails, educational tours, and the engaging Intaka Kids’ Club bring the reserve’s ecology to life.
The reserve’s Eco-Centre and Lapa host school groups, events, and birthday parties, all within a setting powered by rainwater harvesting, solar and wind features—ideal for environmental learning.
Open October–April: 07:30–19:00; May–September: 07:30–17:30, Intaka Island is accessible daily except 25 December.
