Rietvlei Wetland Reserve, part of Cape Town’s Table Bay Nature Reserve, spans around 663 ha of freshwater lakes, reedbeds, estuarine lagoons, seasonal marshes, and coastal dunes at Flamingo Vlei. This biodiverse sanctuary is a hotspot for nature lovers, featuring:

  • Birdwatching paradise: Over 173 bird species recorded (102 waterbirds), including flamingos, pelicans, herons, and coots. The reserve ranks as the 6th most important coastal wetland in South Africa for waterbird congregations.
  • Wildlife & plants: Hosts 220+ plant species across reed-, sedge-, and open-pan wetlands. Wildlife includes otters, marsh mongooses, frogs, fish, and numerous invertebrates .
  • Outdoor recreation: Boardwalks and two bird hides ("Old Friends" and "Sunset") for quiet wildlife viewing. Clean pathways are ideal for walking, jogging, environmental tours, and picnics. An education centre offers guided programmes.
  • Water activities: The Milnerton Aquatic Club hosts windsurfing, sailing, canoeing, and paddle boating. However, swimming and full-contact water sports are not allowed due to wildlife protection.
  • Facilities & access: Open daily from 07:30–17:30. Entry fees apply (around R25 per vehicle; R16 adults, R9 students/children). Amenities include parking, picnic sites, boardwalks, and hides. Dogs and alcohol are prohibited.

Managed by the City of Cape Town and supported by Friends of Rietvlei and SANCCOB, the reserve offers a vital example of coastal wetland conservation and an escape into nature—just minutes from Bloubergstrand.
