Babylonstoren Wine Estate, Klapmuts - Simondium Road, Simondium, South Africa

Babylonstoren, founded in 1692 and now owned by Koos Bekker and Karen Roos, is one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms in the Cape Winelands, celebrated as a “Versailles of vegetable gardens”. Its meticulously designed, 3.5-hectare garden—divided into themed clusters of herbs, viscid succulents, clivias, and indigenous plants—is nurtured with elegance and purpose.

Accommodation & Culinary Delights

The estate offers boutique lodging in tastefully restored Cape-Dutch cottages, including Farmhouse, Garden Cottages, and the recently added Fynbos Family House, each blending heritage architecture with modern luxury. Culinary experiences revolve around the estate’s “pick, clean, serve” philosophy. At Babel, meals are crafted from garden-fresh produce, while The Greenhouse serves light fare, and The Bakery transitions from wood-fired pizzas to a meat-centric ‘Carnivore Experience’ by night.

Gardens, Workshops & Farm Life

The garden isn't just for show—it’s a living classroom. Guests can join guided garden tours, participate in olive oil blending, essential oil distilling, bread baking, or even harvest their own produce during daily morning walks. A neighboring heritage site, Soetmelksvlei, offers a 19th-century farmyard experience on a short shuttle ride.

Spa & Wellness

The Garden Spa, set in a bamboo pavilion amid lush greenery, features signature treatments including hammam rituals, bamboo massages, and lilian terry wraps. The recently expanded Hot Spa offers sauna, vitality pools, a salt room, and an indoor-outdoor pool—complete with a glass-panelled roof for a sky-lit retreat.

Food, Wine & Relaxation

Visitors can enjoy tastings at the estate’s modern Tasting Room, stroll among vineyards, and experience the Wine Museum or participate in wine pairings. Culinary delights stretch beyond the plate, with offerings like homemade gelato, mozzarella from on-site water buffalo, and curated pantry items available in the Farm Shop, Cheese Room, Bakery, Meat Room, and Scented Room. The estate is an integrated experience of sensory wonder—where evolving gardens, historic architecture, culinary artistry, and soulful hospitality converge. Whether you’re a gardener, gourmand, spa enthusiast, or a family, Babylonstoren offers an unforgettable escape immersed in nature, heritage, and craftsmanship.
