Vrede en Lust Wine Estate, established in 1688 by Jacques de Savoye, is a storied gem in the Franschhoek (Simondium) region, seamlessly blending heritage with modern winemaking artistry.
After centuries of legacy, the estate was revitalized in 1996 when the Buys family took ownership. The vineyards reflect those planted in 1745, continuing a deep-rooted viticultural tradition. Led by award-winning winemaker Karlin Nel—appointed at age 25 in 2017—the estate crafts biodynamic wines from vineyards in both Franschhoek and the cooler Elgin region. This diversity allows the team to express distinct terroirs in their range.
Guided by the friendly “Red Ladies,” cellar and vineyard tours reveal the estate’s winemaking techniques and environs. Bookings are recommended, especially during peak harvest season. The modern tasting room, with panoramic views and warm indoor stoves, also serves creative tapas–wine pairings—from gourmet bites to Lindt chocolate and Dalewood cheese matches. Pairing experiences are expertly curated and best enjoyed by advance reservation.
Visitors can stay in beautifully appointed lodgings including:
At Lust Bistro & Bakery, housed in one of the oldest structures on the farm, you’ll find wood-fired breads, pizzas, artisanal bistro fare, and seasonal dishes crafted by a talented culinary team. There’s even a Sunday breakfast–buffet and popular coffee specials, perfect for winding down with local flavors and scenic views.
Vrede en Lust is a sought-after wedding venue, offering options like a vineyard terrace with glass walls, indoor cellar spaces, and gardens, hosting up to 150 guests, all supported by in-house catering and event management. Beyond weddings, guests can enjoy:
With a consistent 4.5-star rating from hundreds of reviews, visitors highlight the estate’s friendly service, exceptional tapas and bakery offerings, and postcard-perfect views—making it a favorite among winery stops on the Wine Tram and for immersive escapes.
